Good morning. It's 42 and clear. The expected high should be in the mid 50's. The low this morning was 33. Went to see the foot doc this morning. My feet are doing better. The wounds on each of them have closed up by several millimeters. I'm still trying to figure out the problem with my car. It's still running rough. The computer said the problem was a bad EGR valve. I replaced it and there was no difference. This morning, on a hunch, I disconnected the O2 sensor. No difference whatsoever. I thought that would have made some difference.

Good morning. It's 28 and clear. The high should be in the upper 50's and it will be clear. Yesterday I made a structural change to my Model Power fire station. It wasn't deep enough to house my pumper and tender so I extended the back of the structure (1st floor only) by an inch and three quarters using parts made from the wing wall I removed from the O.L. King and Sons building. It isn't the greatest looking job but it does what I need it to. Now the pumper and tender (both from Boley) fit all the way inside. The balance of the day was taken up with working on the car and having dinner with the parents. They know tacos are one of my favorites and made sure I knew about them. Good morning. It's 37 and clear. The high is expected to be in the upper 60's and it will be partly cloudy. Did some work on the Lakeside Shipping building and the Midtown Consolidators building yesterday. The latter now has it's loading docks reattached. The balance of the day was spent on outdoor projects. Today I'll see if I can get to the Walther's engine house an evict it's 8 legged resident, a largish wolf spider. I also need to go through the gas station details I received from another modeler and see what I'll be using right away and put the others in the parts bin for future use. I also have to go through the parts bin and toss out whatever can't be used. I know there're a couple of Bachmann diesels (FT's I think) that I need to look at. They could probably be made to run quite well with the proper attention but are pre-DCC dinosaurs. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 1/22/2009

Good morning. It's 54 and partly cloudy. The high is expected to be around the mid 70's and it will be partly cloudy. I caught the wolf spider that was residing in my Walther's engine house and relocated it to the underside of my neighbor's trailer. That should make a dent in the bug population there. Now that the engine house has been vacated I can start work on modifying the doors. I intend to make the two single doors into one large door as I did with the old engine house at the other end of the layout. Car problems continue. It's starting to look like an injector issue. It runs OK but is somewhat jerky on acceleration. I'm going to run some Seafoam cleaner through it at the end of the month, sooner if I can get the money for it before then. It's $8 a bottle. That's a lot cheaper than a new injector. There;s 6 of those babies. At $89 each that comes to $534 just for the injectors. That doesn't include the cost of new gaskets and seals for the intake system, all of which must be disassembled to get to the fuel rails. Had dinner with the parents yesterday. Beef tips with rice and gravy, green beans, sweet potato and dinner rolls then attended fire dept safety meeting during which we had a fire call come in. Turned out it was a contained control burn. I'm watching CSB safety videos today. (CSB=Chemical Safety and Hazards Investigation Board). Real eye opening stuff! It's really surprising what a lack of knowledge of safety procedures can do. Well I've bored you enough for one day. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 1/23/2009

Good morning. It's 63 and cloudy. The high should be around 70 and there's a chance of rain. If all goes to plan today will be the day I get the work on the doors of my old Walther's backwoods engine house done. For those who are familiar with this structure you know that it has two doors side by side in the front and they are extremely narrow, more narrow even than a single track tunnel portal on a straight stretch of track. My intention is to remove the section that divides them. This will enable me to run in two tracks from a turnout directly in front of the structure. Good morning. It's 39 and cloudy here in the Sportsman's Paradise with a light rain falling. The high should be around the mid 40's with the rain tapering off. I got the work done on the engine house doors yesterday effectively making them into one large door. Walther's probably didn't have that in mind when they made the kit but it lends itself to modification so easily. At the moment there's one track going into it. Eventually there will be two. Good morning. It's just below freezing here at 31 and it's cloudy. The high is expected to be in the high 50's and it will be partly cloudy. Friday is coming into view and will soon be in torpedo range! Well I went camera shopping yesterday. I looked at the ones at Walgreen's but none were set up for demonstration so I went over to Wal-Mart. Try as I might I couldn't find the Kodak Easy-Share 713. The Kodak Easy-Share 813 was on display however so I tried it. The results were less than spectacular. It worked OK from a distance but had a lot of trouble with close-up shots, even with no zoom. By close-up I mean within a foot. I tried several others, some just didn't seem to balance well in my hands (no feeling there) and weren't easily held onto. Then I came across a Nikon Cool-Pix L18. I seem to remember somebody telling me they had great success with one of these. I tried it and found it extremely easy to use, easy to hold onto and balance and was essentially point and shoot. I tried several shots with it and was quite pleased. One shot was of the store shelf and was within six inches at full zoom. It was crisp and clear. The focus was so sharp I thought I might get cut. I checked the price. Not bad, just under $100. I looked for one on the shelf and wouldn't you know it, out of stock. Well all is not lost. Upon returning home I did an internet search for it. I found a lot of places that advertised it but most had a message that I really dislike. Out of stock / discontinued. After searching more sites than I care to count I finally located one and for $20 less and with free shipping. I checked the availability to be sure. Yep, it was there. I immediately ordered it and it should be here within a couple of weeks. Does this mean I'll stop using the old Olympus? Not on your life! I'll keep using it until it either shrivels up and dies or I can no longer get cards for it. There are a couple of cards on the way but there's no guarantee they'll work. At present I have one operational SM card (64MB) and I get error messages on it periodically. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 1/29/2009

Man, I really went on a spending spree this week. In one day I bought a SM card for my Olympus D550Z camera, a new Nikon L18 camera so I can get the kind of close-up shots I've been wanting to do and a #5 right-hand turnout so I can split the track going to the north engine house. That comes to a total of $202.43. The train budget is gonna be kinda slim for a couple of months or so while I get that paid down. My credit card is smoking!

Good morning. It's 36 and partly cloudy. The high should be around the low 60's and it will be partly cloudy. Didn't get much accomplished yesterday. I've got a plan laid out for splitting the track to the north engine house so I can have two tracks going in. Now I just have to wait for the turnout to arrive. It was picked up at Midlothian Hobbies at noon yesterday by USPS and was last seen leaving Fort Worth Texas. Today I'll likely be out paying bills. It's that time again. Good morning. It's 35 and clear. The high will be in the high 60's and it will be partly cloudy. Went to Alexandria yesterday and picked up a couple of things. One was a pack of half section 18" radius curves and the other was a Bachmann locomotive set containing two UP GP40's and a rather cheesy looking offset cupola caboose. I have zero interest in the caboose. I bought the set primarily because of the second loco. It's a dummy unit that I have plans for. The other unit is powered but was built with 6 wheel pickup and 4 wheel drive. After some work last night I rebuilt the powered unit. It's now 8 wheel pickup and 8 wheel drive. My plan for the dummy unit is to weight it by packing modeling clay into it's plastic frame. It will then take it's place behind my two SDP40F's. I don't have any real plans for today so I'll take it as it comes along. I can't do any work on the track to the north engine house until the turnout gets here anyway. Good morning. It's 47 and partly cloudy with rain on the way. The high will be in the upper 60's. Yesterday I received two items in the mail. One is an 8 mb SM memory card I can use for my Olympus camera and the other is the #5 right-hand turnout I ordered from Bachmann last week. It was sent from Midloathian Texas. Up to now I had never heard of the place so I looked it up. Turns out it's about halfway between where I am now and my home town of Troup Texas. I had originally thought to have the two tracks into the engine house side by side but I got to thinking about it (do I hear insurance companies going bankrupt?) and there's enough room in there to have one track angled so I think that's what I'll do. There's a hole in the foam in that area so with a little extra planning I can make a pit under the track. I think that would be a great little project. Only thing is I hav eto wait a few days while I get used to this new med the doc me on. Avodart. It really has a punch the first time you use it. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 2/1/2009

Good morning. It's 51 and very wet! The high should be around the mid 50's and it will be partly cloudy. Just after 2am this morning I was awakened by a racket that sounded like a hail of machine gun bullets on my tin roof. I looked outside to see what was going on and saw that we were having a hail storm. The hail was the size of small marshmallows, about as big as the end of your pinkie finger. This kept up for about 15 minutes. By the time the storm passed there was a layer of hail just over an inch thick on the ground. A little while ago I got another surprise. It seems some of my hints and tips have been appearing in Model Railway Express magazine for some time now. I pulled the site up and dug around a bit and sure enough there they are. It's nice that somebody is making use of them. As of 3:55 am this morning my new Nikon L18 camera was in Alexandria and was last seen heading for Leesville via UPS. I should have it in my hot hands sometime today. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 2/2/2009

Tonight my father was telling me about something that happened on Fort Polk last week. The railroad track that runs past the part of the post he works at has a very sharp curve. It's OK for SW's and the geeps but for some reason they were trying to take one of those massive Southern Belle GE's round it. Needless to say it didn't make it. The rails broke loose from the ties and the loco hit the dirt. It took the better part of a day to get it out of there.

Good morning. It's 31 and partly cloudy here. The high is expected to be in the low 60's and it will be partly cloudy. Didn't find any damage yesterday from the early morning hail storm. As most are aware of by now my new camera came in yesterday as did a new 128 MB SM card for my Olympus D550. I was getting really tired of card errors popping up on that old 64 MB card I was using. Here's the project I chose to do today. Seems I have this UP dummy GP40 locomotive. I want to put it in consist behind my two SDP40F's but at 1.5 ounces it's much too light for that. I removed the shell exposing the empty plastic frame within. I then packed the frame with modeling clay to give the loco a weight of 5.5 ounces.

Good morning. It's a balmy 33F and it's partly cloudy. The high should be in the low 50's and it will be partly cloudy. Yesterday I got the dummy UP GP40 apart and weighted it with modeling clay. The nice thing about this stuff is that it never dries out so it stays heavy. The loco started off at 1.5 ounces and now weighs 5.5 ounces. If I need more weight later I can throw in some lead. Today I'll try and get to work on the engine house project. Had to take my father's pickup in for work yesterday. It needed new shocks all the way around and the windshield wiper motor was shorted out. It was ready several hours later and passed the safety inspection with flying colors. How is this train related? I use this truck to haul in old railroad ties when I can find them. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 2/4/2009

Planned project for today will be to get a fence up on the Shell station property/ Funny thing about plans is that they don't always go as planned. We also have fire dept hose testing today. Wonder how many we'll bust this year. We lost two last year. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 2/7/2009
